My wife believes in this old-wives-tale where kids should get their first haircut after the kid reaches one. And not just that, the first cut should be done by someone smart, or really smart so that the kid will grow smart as well. We did it with Adrian and now, with Aaron. Just out of curiosity I googled it and I found the following:
1) Ukrainian babies often have their hair cut on their first birthday as part of the ancient Postryzhennya custom.
2) There is an African American tradition of performing the first haircut on or around the child’s first birthday.
3) Traditional Jews often wait until a boy’s third birthday before giving his first haircut. This is called “Upsherin” — a Yiddish word meaning to “cut off.” (Little extreme I think.)
I did not find anything specific about this old-wives-tale. But as I was browsing the haircut department of the internet, I read a lot of comments on forums about them doing/did the same thing to their kids – they waited one year and they let a smart person or someone with a good personality do the first cut.
For both of our sons, we chose our good friend Shereen to do the first cut. Shereen has a really good personality and really smart. She enjoys long walk on the beach and reading a book by the fireplace. If you want to know more about Shereen please contact us. She’s married by the way.
Thank you Shereen!!
So now, here’s Aaron’s first haircut. Videos are at the bottom
(Excuse the quality – wife’s hands were shaky and it’s only a cameraphone)
